The adventure of a lifetime is waiting for you
The School of the World is a Costa Rica surf camp + surf school for all skill levels, and we are one of the most established and well respected surf camps in Costa Rica. Learn to surf in the warm waters of Costa Rica any week of the year. Get ready to drop in!
Yoga and surfing are both good for your body, mind, and soul. Learning a new language expands your outer world. This is one of our most popular combinations. Each day (M-F) consists of approximately 2 hours of Spanish class, an hour of Spanish Lab (designed to reinforce the day’s lesson with conversation, games, etc), 1,5 hour of Yoga class, plus 2 hours of Surf class.
Yoga: Class sizes are small and our experienced instructors keep learning fun and relaxed. Our certified instructors blend their training in Ashtanga, Iyengar, and Anusara yoga into the practice. Whether you are a beginner or have years of experience, our intention is for you to leave with the tools necessary to enrich and deepen your practice.”
Surf: Our expert instructors cater to all skill levels from beginners to advanced. Warm water year round, consistent surf conditions, and local breaks for all levels of surfers, the Playa Jaco area is an amazing place to surf! The School of the World has been widely respected as one of the top surf schools in Costa Rica for over 16 years.
Beginners learn the basics of paddling, standing, and turning, as well as wave selection and other fundamental skills from our instructors, some of the best and most experienced in the country. They have completed rigorous international surf instructor and ocean lifesaver training, so you will feel comfortable and safe in the water. Here at School of the World we have been teaching people to surf day in and day out since 1997. In addition to the daily surf sessions, we also incorporate land based balance training and photo + video review sessions into our programs.
Already a surfer? Then you know great surf is a recipe of a lot of elements coming together perfectly- swell, direction, tide, wind, time of day, and season are all factors. Local knowledge is key to scoring great waves on vacation, and having a great place to hang out between surf sessions is a big bonus. Just a few reasons why surfers keep coming back to School of the World’s surf camp! Let our experienced Costa Rica surf guides show you the best waves around and help you take your surfing to the next level.
*Surf classes generally have no more than three students per instructor.
Spanish: Our Spanish program is designed to help you become proficient and comfortable communicating in Spanish, while enjoying a relaxing and fun environment conducive to learning. Beginner 1, Beginner 2, Intermediate, and Intermediate-Advanced levels are available, in durations ranging from 1 week to 1 month and beyond.
This combination is sure to keep you feeling amazing inside and out. The yoga and spanish schedule changes weekly to accommodate the surf schedule and tides. In yoga, surfing and languages, the more you practice the better you get.
Our schedule is created on a weekly base and completely written on the tides of the ocean, the amount of people and their course combinations. Therefore, it changes every week.
In terms of hours, the classes will be divided as following:
Surf: 1 session (2 hours) a day, transportation to the beach, surfboard and instructor is included. Based on the tides, surf can take place anywhere between 6am and 4pm.
Yoga: 1,5 hours a day, yoga mat and other equipment is included. Yoga usually is the first class or the last class of the day, so everyone is able to attend.
Spanish; 2 hours of Spanish class and 1 hour of Spanish Lab a day.
Our beautiful facility has free Wi-Fi for our guests, a shared kitchen and dining area, 12 guestrooms, outdoor lounge, pool, garden, and lots of great spots to hang out and relax. Posted onCan't get enough of the PURA VIDA!SOTW was my first big girl solo trip and I couldn't have asked for a better experience. From the accommodations, to the staff and instructors, to the classes themselves, nothing disappoints. As long as you have the traveller and nomad community mindset and not expecting a 5 star Ritz stay, you will not be disappointed. I made some amazing friends at SOTW, met some incredible and interesting people, learned Spanish and Photography, and tried my hand at surfing (wonderfully patient instructors...ha!), and zen'd out with some mind and body rejuvenating Yoga! I can't say enough good things and will be back again! SOTW is truly a beautiful experience and you depart a little wiser, fitter, courageous, and full hearted. PURA VIDA!
Posted onAwesome classes, great area, and most importantly amazing community and staffI originally booked my stay for 4 weeks at the school and I ended up staying 2 months!
I stayed in a shared room, and everything was clean and well-maintained. The a/c there works well, there's a mini fridge and plates/utensils in the room by the sink, and the bed was comfortable.
When it comes to the classes at SOTW, I never thought I'd surf a day in my life, and I've completed 8 weeks of surfing with the school now. Before you hit the water, an instructor will go over popping up on your board, staying safe in the water and with your board, and setting your expectations for your surf experience. About half way through the week, one of the guys films the students surfing, and then everyone gathers later to watch the video and an instructor goes over mistakes and how to improve your surfing. The instructors were absolutely fantastic; they gave great advice and were very encouraging. I felt safe every moment surfing with them, and my surfing overall improved greatly under their instruction.
The school takes pride in employing great people who love what they do, and it really shows. Carlos in particular was an amazing instructor to work with. I had surf and photography with him, and I found that he's very knowledgeable and passionate with both. Getting to learn from him was a highlight of my trip for sure!
A tip for an incoming student would be sign up for surf, don't just do Spanish/yoga/photo. Also, bring sunscreen and bug spray.
I know I'll be back and I will 100% recommend the school to friends. Pura vida.
Posted onHome away from home!SOTW became more than I could ever ask for. I stayed at the school for close to three weeks. I signed up for a surf intensive, which was about four hours of surf, Monday-Friday. I learned from five incredible instructors who made the experience unforgettable. Additionally, the staff at the school are also amazing people who feel like family. They all filled my heart with so much love. I can't wait to return in a few months. SOTW will be one of your best decisions. Pura Vida.
