Exercise your mind, body, and spirit

The School of the World is a Costa Rica surf camp + surf school for all skill levels, and we are one of the most established and well respected surf camps in Costa Rica. Learn to surf in the warm waters of Costa Rica any week of the year. Get ready to drop in!

Yoga and surfing are both good for your body, mind, and soul. This combination is sure to keep you feeling amazing inside and out. Surf sessions are 2 hours a day (M-F), and yoga classes are 1.5 hours each day (M-F). The yoga schedule changes weekly to accommodate the surf schedule and tides. With both yoga and surfing, the more you practice the better you get.

Surf: Our expert instructors cater to all skill levels from beginners to advanced. Warm water year round, consistent surf conditions, and local breaks for all levels of surfers, the Playa Jaco area is an amazing place to surf! The School of the World has been widely respected as one of the top surf schools in Costa Rica for over 16 years.

Beginners learn the basics of paddling, standing, and turning, as well as wave selection and other fundamental skills from our instructors, some of the best and most experienced in the country. They have completed rigorous international surf instructor and ocean lifesaver training, so you will feel comfortable and safe in the water. Here at School of the World we have been teaching people to surf day in and day out since 1997. In addition to the daily surf sessions, we also incorporate land based balance training and photo + video review sessions into our programs.

Already a surfer? Then you know great surf is a recipe of a lot of elements coming together perfectly- swell, direction, tide, wind, time of day, and season are all factors. Local knowledge is key to scoring great waves on vacation, and having a great place to hang out between surf sessions is a big bonus. Just a few reasons why surfers keep coming back to School of the World’s surf camp! Let our experienced Costa Rica surf guides show you the best waves around and help you take your surfing to the next level.

*Surf lessons generally have no more than three students per instructor.

Yoga: Class sizes are small and our experienced instructors keep learning fun and relaxed. Our certified instructors blend their training in Ashtanga, Iyengar, and Anusara yoga into the practice. Whether you are a beginner or have years of experience, our intention is for you to leave with the tools necessary to enrich and deepen your practice.

Our schedule is created on a weekly base and completely written on the tides of the ocean, the amount of people and their course combinations. Therefore, it changes every week.

In terms of hours, the classes will be divided as following:

Surf: 1 session (2 hours) a day, transportation to the beach, surfboard and instructor is included. Based on the tides, surf can take place anywhere between 6am and 4pm.

Yoga: 1,5 hours a day, yoga mat and other equipment is included. Yoga usually is the first class or the last class of the day, so everyone is able to attend.

This was a trip I'll never forget! The surf camp and school were just amazing from the students to the staff and the many surf instructors. Perfect amount of guidance and instruction mixed with some laughs, fun, and gorgeous views. The school offered a great opportunity to meet new people whether you are traveling alone or with friends. I will never forget my visit and fully plan on returning in the near future!

Everything about this school is awesome! The first time I went there I didn't know what to expect but everyone there was so welcoming and fun. I spent 5 weeks there in September/October and then went travelling for 3 months with another girl I met at the school and came back in May to visit all the awesome people. During the time there I learned a lot in Spanish from Lucia, the best Spanish teacher ever and I had soo much fun surfing everyday! It's hard to explain but when you're there you feel at home and you feel like everyone at the school is your family.
The early morning and amazing sunset surf sessions, the fruteria around the corner, the Wednesday sushi and pizza shop night, the Saturday surf comp, the pool parties, the countless trips to Tacobar and of course all the amazing people you meet make this school so amazing! It's a must do for every adventure seeker out there!

I had an amazing time at the school of the world. The whole experience was pretty much right on target with my expectations. I got a cheaper room and even that was nice. Lots of space, a/c and reliable wifi. The people who were there at the same time as me were super friendly, and i tend to be slightly antisocial. Good vibes all around. Surfing was better than expected, good waves, great instructors and beauty all around. Spanish lessons were constructive, my teacher Lucia is the best. I signed up for Yoga but i wasn't feeling it. I wish Yoga was in the morning before surfing. The floors in the yoga studio are cement, so doubling up the mats helps the knees. Jaco is a really easy town to get around. I went during the rainy season so it was more calm, but still there is plenty to do. Three weeks went by in a snap.

I enrolled in the Spanish Immersion/Photography courses and LOVED EVERY moment of my time in Costa Rica thanks to School of The World! A colleague and I traveled together from NYC for Professional Development and it was AWESOME. The accommodations in the boutique hotel were basic by American hotel standards, but it was clean and the artistic touches were beautiful (ex. the bathroom sink was hand-made tile!). However, I was BARELY in my room. The hotel had DELIGHTFUL shared spaces to encourage "residents" to congregate & mingle: the kitchen/dining area was alfresco and there was a hammock near the small pool. A really funky place that made me feel like a hipster. :-)
It's the CLASSES and the Family/Faculty that REALLY make School of the World pretty amazing: our photography instructor is a world class surfer & professional photographer who took us on THE. COOLEST. PhotoShoot opportunities EVER!!
The Spanish classes were fun and sometimes we'd walk into "town" conversing in Spanish along the way. Lastly, School of The World organized a Day Trip for it's "residents". We went kayaking to a private beach where we were served a delicious meal of fruits. The entire trip was AWE-inspiring for me! From what I can see on their website - School of the World has gotten MUCH better since 2011! I may return if time allows. It's "simply" AWESOME and the BEST DEAL Ever with the combination: classes and accomodations. Food's not included - but food is so inexpensive in that area that it's not a big deal. The ONLY 'scary' thing for THIS City Gurl were the HUGE Iguanas EVERYwhere! Most people who travel that region are pretty used to them.
